I stayed up till 5 am last night, watching Titanic. I don’t mean to disrespect the real-life accident but the movie is just soo… boring. Apart from DiCaprio’s eyes, there’s not much to it. But I also realised that I was in the mood for a completely different kind of romantic comedy and choosing the wrong one, spoilt not only my mood but Titanic entirely for me.
So to save all of you from making a grave mistake I did, let me tell you which rom-com you should watch.
#1. You’re watching a rom-com as a substitute of being on Tinder
Now, this is a real-life crisis. You can’t always go outside and meet a guy and experience the thrill of the whole event so, you’re here instead planning to watch a rom-com. In this case, you are no there to understand the class disparity that existed in the 20th century. Heck, you’re not even here for Jack and Rose’s true-I will run back into a flooding ship for you-love on the Titanic. You aren’t in the mood for a sob story like The Notebook or a deep romance like About Time or The Vow. No! What you need is a dose of Friends with Benefits or No Strings Attached. Fun, cute, frivolous but also very engaging. You don’t want to deal with complicated, dark plots, you just want to be happy and watch a very fun love story. Both these movies are exactly that. They’ll make you feel like love exists without feeling the burden of eternal bonds and one true love.
#2 You actually want to witness true love
Unlike people who fit into the #1 category, you actually do want to watch people fall in love. You don’t want a frivolous love affair but you want to feel something real. Something that makes everything worth it. For you, I would still not recommend Titanic because honestly, I like you and I want you to enjoy this experience. So I would recommend one of my absolute favourites- Life as we know it. This movie really pulls on your heartstrings and makes you want to fall in love with falling in love. If this movie still isn’t your jam then you also have the options of watching The Vow, Call me by your name, Notting Hill, Brokeback Mountain, Dirty Dancing… oh all these fabulous movies. Pick anyone and you’ll have an amazing time! (As long as you’re not homophobic)
#3 You want a light-hearted romance
Now, this is for the people who want to see two hot people fall in love but don’t actually want to be crying by the end. You just want to feel something and go to sleep with a smile on your face. You just want to imagine a world where Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson would live together happily in their New York apartment, working at famous magazine companies, drinking Starbucks every morning and looking effortlessly glamourous. Well, you guessed it, you need to watch- How to lose a guy in 10 days. Or might a suggest a movie with the gorgeous Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock- The Proposal. You could also be in the mood for the classic- 10 things I hate about you.
#4 You want more comedy than romance
You guys are the most confused of the lot. You’ve watched all the movies I’ve mentioned above and while you’re in the mood for all of them, you’re also not in the mood for any of them. What you actually need is a good laugh or a lot of entertainment, the romance part can be more subtle. For you I recommend- Crazy, Stupid Love, Princess Diaries, Isn’t it romantic, I feel pretty, Step Up (all of them), Bride Wars, She’s the man. There are more but I’m not trying to write a 5000-word essay on rom-coms out here. Also, if you feel like this is all too frivolous for you, watch Catch me if you can. This is a romantic tragedy between you and Leo’s beautiful eyes.
To watch or not to watch
I hope you’re able to find the right movie for your late-night watch and that you don’t make the same mistake I did. Here is an added list of some movies that people often wonder if they should watch or not. Let me be your best friend!
- Set it up- Worth a watch
- The Half of it- Definitely. Especially for people from category #2.
- Christmas movies- Watch at your own risk. Only recommended with friends/ family so you can make fun of the movie.
- Midnight at the Magnolia- Nooooooo. This movie is honestly unbearable.
- Bridesmaids- Yes, yes, yes. Especially for people from category #4.
- To all the boys I’ve ever loved- It’s cute, I like it.
- To all the boys I’ve ever loved pt.2- No. They took a good thing too far and ruined it. Also, these guys are supposed to be like 16yrs old, what in the world?
Have a question about whether you should watch a movie or not? DM me on Instagram and I’d be happy to help. But I hope this long list helps you figure it out and is exactly the rom-com guide you need.
Have fun!
